Anthony Mathews is Director of the Beyster Institute at the Rady School of Management, UC San Diego.  He joined the non-profit institute dedicated to promoting employee ownership and entrepreneurship after retiring from a nearly 30 year long career as one of the best-known ESOP and employee ownership experts in the country.  Tony has served as a consultant to hundreds of ESOP companies through his positions at some of the most respected consulting and administration firms in the country.  Prior to his retirement, Tony served as a Vice President and Senior Consultant with the Principal Financial Group.

Tony is a frequent speaker and author on a wide range of employee ownership issues including employee ownership program feasibility and design; creation and development of an ownership culture; coordination of employee ownership tactics with other estate planning strategies; administrative and operational efficiency of employee ownership vehicles; repurchase planning for closely held companies; corporate governance and executive compensation in the context of employee ownership companies; and many other related topics.

He is a founding member of the Administrative Advisory Committee of The ESOP Association and a former Director of the same.  He is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Western States Chapter of The ESOP Association.  He has served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Center for Employee Ownership and is a member since its inception.  He is also a member of numerous other associations with interests in employee ownership, pensions and related matters.  Tony serves as an independent, outside director for several employee ownership companies in California.

Tony received his BA from Loyola University of Los Angeles in 1971 and his MA from UCLA in 1976.
