IA1Honoree: Mr. Michael Mellace and Mr. Mike Runion

Company Name: Mellace Family Brands, Inc.

Michael Mellace and his partner, Mike Runion, have created a company with a desire to impact the world. The company, Mellace Family Brands, Inc., was founded in 2001 with the values of tradition, quality and wholesome ingredients.

Today, Mama Mellace’s is all about simple, homemade goodness and quality ingredients that create wholesome treats and make uncomplicated snacks, simply better.

Besides the strong founding values, Mike was inspired by his Mama’s generosity and his Christian faith to create The Mama Cares Foundation to give back to the needy. Mama Cares provides assistance to many individuals, families and organizations in need.  Recent focus is on efforts to eliminate severe acute malnutrition which is the underlying cause of death of millions of children around the world every year. They are leading the fight to provide a nutritional paste to 3rd & 4th world countries from the leftovers of the company’s snack foods, which will meet the nutritional needs of a starving person for an entire day. Two percent of every Mama Mellace’s product sold goes directly to the foundation, the mission to assist those who desire to serve the Lord by lending a hand to individuals, families, and organizations that are struggling to overcome the challenges of their situation here at home and around the world. In addition, Michael & his wife have adopted a child from Ethiopia.

IA2Honoree: Mr. Richard Muscio

Company: Indevia Accounting – Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation

Richard Muscio is a founder of the Oceanside Turkey Trot and the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation.  Richard’s personal commitment to the success of the O’side Turkey Trot, the MYFBYE foundation has been a key element to the positive impact of both.

The Trot, founded in 2006, has raised over $65,000 for Oceanside Schools and inspired over 15,000 North County residents to start a new tradition of running or walking on Thanksgiving Day and every day with their family and friends.

The MYFBYE Foundation was also created in 2006 to inspire everyone to move their feet before they eat and help lead our nationwide battle against obesity and inactivity.

The Foundation accomplishments over the past 4 years include coordinating the dispersal of 180 donated pairs of Nike athletic shoes to Oceanside Middle School Kids, Funding a motivational video to encourage a diverse group of young girls to utilize running to help them reach their personal and professional goals, (The video is available online at the foundation website in English and Spanish) Funding the running component of the Oceanside Boys and Girls Club which had 700 kids in the program in 2009, Funding for 20 Move Your Feet Before You Eat ! Street Pole Banners, Funding for 3,000 Move You Feet Before You Eat ! Backpacks, Funding for 9,000 Move Your Feet Before You Eat Finisher’s Medals for the Oceanside Turkey Trot and the Vista Strawberry Festival 5K,  Donated over $70,000 to local non profits who have participated in the O’side Turkey Trot and Strawberry Festival 5K,  Funded speaking presentations at Schools in the O’side service area. Without Richard’s leadership and generosity the positive impact of the foundation and O’side Trot would not be a reality.

IA3Honoree: Mr. Phil Pace and Mr. Jeff Loya

Company: Phil’s BBQ

Phil Pace and Jeff Loya have operated Phil’s BBQ in San Diego for over 12 years.  In addition to serving the best BBQ ribs in town, Phil and Jeff have made it a major point of their operation to give back to the San Diego community.  They support a number of charities through cash donations, sponsorships and other awareness campaigns.

Here are a few highlights:

– Big Brothers/Big Sisters OPERATION BIGS: Phil’s BBQ raised $38,000 in 2009 and $40,000 in 2010 in support of the BBBS Mentoring Program to assist children whose parents are deployed members of the military.

– Rady Children’s Hospital: Phil’s BBQ raised $10,000 in 2009 at the Shamu and You Family Fun Walk.

– San Diego Humane Society: Phil Pace has personally donated more than $17,000 to the San Diego Humane Society since 2008.

– Salvation Army/Kroc Center: Phil has personally donated over $6,000 to the Salvation Army Scholarship Fund.

In addition, Phil’s BBQ has sponsored fundraising events that have benefitted the following organizations:

– American Diabetes Association – Lions, Tigers, and Bears Big Cat Refuge – National Foundation for Autism research – Center for Community Solutions – Rebuilding Together San Diego – Polinsky Center

IA4Honoree: Mr. Alan Sorkin

Since co-founding San Diego Social Venture Partners (SDSVP) in 2001, Alan Sorkin has been the driving force in inspiring hundreds of men and women to become deeply involved and contribute their time, talent and resources to their local community. Since its inception, Alan has been the driving force behind SDSVP’s $17M contribution of cash and in-kind services to the local community.

Alan’s message: “You have more to give” – has resonated with the 275 individuals who have joined SDSVP since then.  SDSVP members’ shared goal is to work with promising nonprofit organizations which are making a difference by building their internal operations so that they can be more sustainable. “We’re encouraging people to take their entrepreneurial skills and professional experience and apply them to the community’s most serious challenges. People have so much more to give than just money.  SDSVP is the perfect vehicle: it builds great volunteers and philanthropists and catalyzes social change,” says Alan.

Alan is volunteering and grant making with a twist: using his own professional skills, insight and experience, Alan works hand in hand with nonprofit staff and boards to strengthen every aspect of their operations and maximize their impact:

-Alan was instrumental in the development of Junior Achievement’s BizTown -Spent hundreds of hours building SDSVP’s infrastructure to generate more impact in the community -Helped Cultivating Brilliance Institute build their board from four “letterhead board people” to a strong vibrant board of 20 -Groomed Excellence in Justice & Education from a nonprofit that started with a $5K grant to become a $2M charter school -Consulted with ElderHelp on their Social Enterprise Plan to diversify revenue stream and help more elderly individuals stay in their home. -Has helped many organizations to think more strategically enabling them to generate more money.

IA5Nominee: Mr. Charles Foster CFA

Charles Foster goes out of his way to bring close friends and family together to celebrate the life of his friend Richard Page. Richard died of Parkinson’s complications but still inspires people who were lucky enough to know him.

Charles, motivated by Richard’s life, wanted to do something to keep Richard’s inspiration alive. Together with Richard’s family and friends, they planned the “Second Annual Richard Page Memorial Invitational Round-Robin Tournament and Dinner” with Parkinson’s Disease Association of San Diego as the beneficiary. Charles and his wife Alicia efforts are endless in supporting their friend and others who live with this disease.

Murray Kreiss founded Kreiss Enterprises in 1939.  Norman and Eileen Kreiss (Eileen has since deceased) went on to run the family owned business, a high-end retailer of home furnishings.  Their sons, Michael, Tom and Robert Kreiss, now run the family business.  Since 1992, Kreiss Enterprises has been a leading sponsor of the Stevens Cancer Center Tennis Tournament and its co-event, The Spinoff Auction.  Their philanthropic support to the Scripps Health Cancer Center Stevens Division now totals over half a million with gifts from the company and gifts from the Norman Kreiss and Eileen Kreiss Family Foundation.

For over the past 19 years, James Ogle Jr., his family and Lloyd Pest Control  have been founding board members and loyal supporters of the Scripps Health Cancer Center, Stevens Division at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, donating since its inception.  Whether through small or large gifts, in-kind gifts, whatever the auction or the committee needed, the Ogle family has been there responding to the needs of the Stevens Cancer Center and their dear friend Dr. John Trombold.  Donations came to our Cancer Center from the business in the form of sponsorships of our annual Spinoff Auction for Live, and from the Ogle family personally.

Founded in 1993 by Executive Director Scott H. Silverman, Second Chance is committed to breaking the cycle of unemployment, poverty, homelessness, substance abuse and incarceration that plague our city.

This is accomplished by offering job readiness training, job placement, affordable housing, mental health counseling, and case management to men and women who desire to change their lives. Second Chance’s programs and initiatives are designed to address the workforce development needs of the “hardest to serve” segments of San Diego’s population. By assisting individuals who are committed to becoming self-sufficient, positive members of their community, Second Chance helps to prevent chronic social problems.

Frank and Anita Vizcarra are making a lasting impact in the lives of children from the barrios of San Diego by not only providing scholarships for them to attend university, but are also meeting with them twice a year to help counsel them, give them life skills and broaden their view of the world – and increase their self confidence. A tremendous story of “paying it forward” developed from the influence of several mentors in his life.

IA8Nominee: Mr. Tibi Zohar

Tibi Zohar co-­founded the Jewish American Chamber of Commerce in 2006 to inspire professionals and business owners to fulfill their values, enhance their skills, and grow their business.

In 2008, Tibi joined the board of Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, and volunteers his time to promote it. This charitable organization changes the lives of deformed children. It features a group of world class Plastic surgeons, who volunteer to perform complicated cosmetic and reconstructive operations, on children brought from all over the world to San Diego.

In 2009 Tibi joined the two co-­?founders of T.E.A.M (training and Education About the Middle-­?east), to establish a prominent San Diego Israel Advocacy organization. T.E.A.M provides tools to better understand the Middle Eastern conflict through education. He is currently serving as the VP of community relations, and runs the speakers and presenters training program.
